Day 111 Heading to Bend

2nd August
I slept pretty well and  woke to the sound of otter hikers heading off  I put out my head to see juicy  pass.
See you up the trail,Juicy said as he strode off
I repeated it back to him.
By the time I emerged there was only 1 tent left apart from mine.

Bugger my fly was soaked due to condensation of being by the lake
I haven’t really mastered taking the tent down wet yet.
I packed up, leaving my sodden tent until last. I tried putting it on the outside of my pack, that didn’t work so I rolled it up with my tent, I will need to dry it as soon as i can.
Right all packed and off I struggled along a rough trail, then I came across shredder who was camped on the trail, he said he had given up looking for the spot and camped here. I didn’t blame him as it was a trek especially in the dark.
I walked back to the main camp, I have too much food this is crazy snail I said to myself. Once back at the camp I found the bathroom. The place was eerily quite, far too early for kids to be getting up lol
I made my way back to the hikers hut and attempted to shake down my pack, I always carry too much stuff although so put some of my spare food into the hiker box

I was charging my phone when shredder appeared, I couldn’t make my mind up weather to make tea or not.I wasted several hours here before deciding to hike out.
I decided to walk along the dirt road out and the intercept with the pct then hike to the pass to hitch. As I was walking a jeep slowed to a stop

I would offer you a lift to the road , but i’m full.
The jeep indeed was packed .
He then appeared to change his mind.
IF you ccan get your pack in i could take you to the road if you dont mind stnading on the back ?

I shoved my pack in then clung on to the roof bars standing on the Bumper (fender) and off we went.
It was bloody brilliant, exhilarating and dangerous , We drove past several ski resorts all mothballed until snow and many lovely little cabins.
One ski lift is still working so the mad idiots around here can take their bikes up and cycle down. Mad scary shit but then I am no Adrenalin junkie   well maybe a little.

Soon we arrive at the highway fantastic.
I thanked him, retrieved my pack before taking my normal hitching stanch
I was heading for Bend. I waited about 15 minutes before being picked up by Rob in his huge pickup. He was a diesel mechanic and could drop me at Sisters. We sped along passing a huge lake again just beautiful and then a large burn area from about 19 years ago that almost took out Sisters and sadly claimed the life of several fire fighters.
Sisters was a beautiful town but sadly didn’t have what I needed hence I was heading to bend.
Rob dropped me off and I began the second stage .
Once again I was soon picked up and was heading to bend. Jeremy was my driver. He was a tad strange, he said he was a pilot and in the SAS. He said that he had been shot in the head so I don’t really think he knew what was going on as his stories didn’t match. He was friends with the queen and flew with Prince William. Well it passed the time and soon we pulled up outside REI Brilliant I thanked him and struggled into the store with all my gear.

We haven’t got REI in the UK yet but it’s awesome, everything you need to play outdoors, Cycles, boats, camping, climbing just amazing. and they have a no quibble returns policy   they will just exchange it.

I went straight upstairs to get my feet measured. This was very odd the machine said I was a 10” but I have been wearing 13” so I tried on several pairs and decided that a 12 ½ fitted best. Then chose some new socks, new ear buds (headphones) a dry sack for my wet tent fly and some gas.

At the checkout I inquired if my account had been credited for my shoes and poles that didn’t arrive, it appeared not so that was a little worrying as I have about a month left … Hopefully they can get that sorted before I leave as  $300 bucks would be quite useful. I paid for my new gear ,the shoes and socks I am sending up the trail so I can swap if needed or to wear home  :0)
Whilst paying timberline arrived. He invited me to meet later for beer but as i was hoping to meet up with Gail so i declined.

My next stop was to find a battery for my phone..In America nothing is close so the shopping complex I was in was in the middle of nowhere.
Just outside the store were several couples having a coffee, I spoke to the first couple and asked if they were local yes indeed they were the lady was originally from Kent .I asked if she knew where I could get a battery for my phone. It so happens they were off to the AT&T store and would give me a ride. Once there I was disappointed but they suggested Best Buy across the street .so I wandered off there but again sadly no. The couple then offered to drive me to Batteries and Bulbs my last hope. I thanked them and wandered in to the store. Hurrah yes thy did. $30 cool then she preceded o try and sell me a new charger an external battery and a solar charger. I laughed and said great sales pitch but I have all that so just the battery please.

I left feeling relieved but hungry I need food, the lady had suggested Applebee’s   so I wandered off to find. I crossed the road and there it was I went inside it was a smart restaurant selling itself as a bar and grill. I was shown a seat then a pint of cool Delicious IPA was set before me. I ordered a salad to start that was one of the best salads I have ever had. I followed this with Fish and    chips again crisp gorgeous batter and another IPA but different sadly I can’t remember their names but they hit the spot. Now I don’t normally do this but yep ill have the desert brownie and ice-cream Ops it was a little large and so I needed another IPA to help it down don’t know what that one was either. Right now fed and watered I could do with a sleep. I made my way out and found a bench in the Shade where I rang Sid. I told him where I was and he would get me shortly. As I sat under my tree stream of kids mainly girls   all dressed in various Soccer kits  so many teams, where arriving in cars to be fed in subway Guess Saturday is Soccer.

Fantastic Sid arrives and we are on the way to his home with the dog sat on the back seat I have to cove up my watch, as he likes the reflection and like to chase it. WE crossed over the Deschutes river   which was full f families and kids doing what the Americans do beat enjoying their leisure time and into a quite suburb. I so like there housing its on three levels.

As soon as I enter  Gail shows me to my room hands me a towel shows we where the shower is and then pressed gorgeous yogurt drink into my hand. Then instructs me to put my clothes in the washer.
God that shower was so good. I change clothes and put on a robe then join them upstairs. WE chatted   for a while and find out about each other. Then im given a Mac book and the wireless pass code so I can catch up with stuff then they are both out shopping.  Just as they begin to drive out the thunder starts then hail big golf size stones which I haven’t seen since I lived in south Africa   many years ago. The sound is utterly deafening as they mash down setting off car alarms. I video a bit then get back to catching up with my blog

I am so amazed at people’s kindness and generosity they have just met me and now i’m alone in their house and ill be alone for much of the day tomorrow   just a huge thank you to you both.
All my devices were plugged in both phone batteries charged   and blog up to date and some video on face book I was feeling so good as my blog was getting behind and I wasn’t able to add pictures.
Oh it’s a silly thing but I love it their tumble dryer has alight on inside the drum.how cool is that. I removed my dried clothes and got dressed.

The dog sat  nervously at my side, as he didn’t like the thunder or the hail. He’s a mutt but a lovely soft mutt (big). At once he got up and began to get excited they must be home!
I cracked on with my blog then went to join them upstairs as it was dinner I ate two large bowls of spaghetti with home made pesto and Parmesan then a huge bowl of salad washed down with mirror Pond Pale ale which is brewed locally by the Deschutes Brewery. They are so tasty the ales here and so had to sample a few more   before bed
Think there is about 12 breweries in this town sadly I can’t stay longer lol.

Oh a nice soft bed and I don’t need to get up fantastic    night all and thanks again my two hosts Gail and Sid

Day 110 Big lake youth camp

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The storm hit about midnight, rain lashing down but I was snuggly and warm in my bag in my tent

Then the wind came the tent was being whipped about but I lay there fairly comfortable   and safe, then I thought mm I hadn’t fastened the fly onto the tent.
I don’t normal bother as  the clips are usually sufficient but as I lay there I began to worry. So at 2 am I got up and clipped them on. Bashed the stakes in further just to be safe and back to bed  and fell asleep listening to the  ind howling  until I fell asleep.
I had planned to get up early but when the alarm went off at 5.30 am .I thought naw ,  and reset it for six.
When that went off I dozed, I was so tired I decided to eat breakfast in my tent a first for me and make tea.
As I was drinking my tea, hikers began to swarm by.
Bugger I thought I ought to get moving.
Hendrick came past followed by Freedom and Shredder who I hadn’t seen since Chester. They were shortly followed by half and half and snake bite.
It was getting busy out there . I threw my stuff in my pack and headed out.  Timberline passed me and stopped for a chat , ” Snail how did you get in front last time I saw you were packing up at 4.30″
I got second wind and pushed on i said
See you up the trail  maybe  the camp ?
I set off up the trail , water wasn’t far, I began to climb and met several day hikers going South. When I passed another beautiful waterfall, my guide said follow the stream back to where it is a spring or rather the source .
It wasn’t far and soon was filling up my bottles.
Suddenly a huge dog appeared, he was lovely and soft, soon his  owners Gail & Sid appeared  we chatted for a while they were from Bend a town several miles away.
I said I was hopefully going to be there tomorrow .
Gail asked where I was staying ?
I haven’t a clue I replied.
Gail then wrote down her phone number and told me to call when I was in town, then then gave me two sticks of cheese  (YUMMY)

I thanked them then hiked on I began to climb up a huge lava flow that seemed to go on forever. I began to meet more day hikers a sign civilisation is not far away

Snow, more snow I hadn’t seen snow in a while and it was a little surprising as I crossed from lava flow to another the had to climb down a small snow field. I was soon in some amazing meadows again, the landscape changes so quickly, I was climbing again to the backdrop of huge mountains sadly I’m not sure what they all are but they are impressive. Then I m dropping down more snow and again more gorgeous meadows and valleys

In the distance stand another three large mountains 1 is Mount Washington and I believe 1 is mount hood but I am not sure which.
Now an even bigger lava flow and this one is tough. Tough on your feet and on your shoes and slow as I need to concentrate. It seems to go on and on
I hate this terrain but it is the PCT some that I have done before they have put a layer of gravel over making it kinder for your feet but not here.

AT last a road but then more lava. The trail then drops down into a small trail head. as i walk through I see the familiar face of Coppertone.
He immediate gets up and makes me a root beer float which I quickly dispose of followed by a soda and two bananas.
I could sit here for hours but I need to get to the youth camp resupply and get out so hesitantly I get ready to leave,
What’s the trail like I ask?
Another two miles of lava snail, then 4 miles of burn
Great I replied and headed out.
Yes more lava and a climb, My favourite combination. But as I climbed the views where stunning.
More rumbling began, Perfect I said to myself, im going to get wet.
Boom went the thunder and a few drops of rain began to fall.
I quickly stopped put on my rain jacket then my packs rain jacket then whoosh.
The rain fell in huge drops.  big heavy raindrops  and I was now in a burn area with no shelter .
I was immediately soaked as I trudged on, no point in stopping as i needed to be somewhere. The rain continued before turning into hail bloody big hail that hurt.
Bloody fantastic I muttered to myself as slogged on, to add to the fun I then had climb numerous log .
Now in the dry this can be tricky but in torrential rain and hail it’s just not fun. I pressed on …at last a glimmer of sun. My rain jacket is great but when your hauling a heavy pack in it you sweat so I soaked inside. …Oh well
The sun then appears and its not long until I am sweating like a Donkey ,but don’t want to stop

Eventually I need a break and can removed my jacket. I quickly Slurp down lemonade before moving off , I guessed that I had 3 miles to go.
I set off with beer legs, I was shifting before running into 6 weekend hikers. being sociable of course i stopped to chat, this lost me momentum and once again i began to plod, until i arrived at the 2000 miles marker.
Bloody hell, fantastic I said to myself and the beer legs appeared again and I was off at last the camp.

I made my way to reception to register for my package.
Well what an amazing camp it called Big Lake youth camp. And has many Chalets for hikers. Campers kids etc to stay in for weekends and longer   with large, mess hall etc

I got my resupply and hen he lady let me buy 2 sodas   I then walked to the hikers hut and was amazed to see the usual suspects here Shredder, Juicy, Timberline, Crusher and several others I didn’t know.
I tried to sort out my food but it was all rushed.

We were allowed to camp but on the outskirts f the camp which when your tired seemed miles away. I was hungry and needed a hot drink but I was too tired so put my tent up and fell in it

Day 109 the Sisters

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

31st July
I was up early but not as early as Crusher who was just walking down the trail, I soon followed him leaving the section hiker in his tent.
I wanted to do at least the same  mileage as yesterday may be more
I zoned out and pounded down the trail soon passing   crusher who was getting water . on wards I went while it was still cool Ping went my watch  great an hour down two more before breakfast. I passed numerous lakes some breathtakingly beautiful whilst other just large muddy puddles
Looks like I’m staying in the forest I said to myself and plodded on  .ping went my watch great as I was hungry.
At last it was breakfast as I crossed a stream I filled up my water and ate my breakfast then washed my socks before resuming walking.
I think I may of done an hour before I came across Crusher having his breakfast. Snail he said I have cell service with AT&T .Oh I said this was dangerous  as I spent far too long uploading blogs etc etc until my battery was dead.
Really  not clever!!!
I need to buy a new battery as the two I have are not holding charge  .I have been saying this for almost 3 months god I’m useless
As I have the brain of a goldfish I wasn’t sure if I was meeting Tarzan at mile 1975 or I was ringing him at mile 1975 see i’m crap..as I wasn’t sure and now had a dead phone I thought I ought to speed up except there were two large hills to climb bugger.but I was flying and sweating buckets and trying to fight off a cloud of mossies who were attacking me.
In the distance I could see one of the sisters a mountain range in Oregon. As I got closer there was s huge wall of rock around it perhaps from a glacier? .I was in a long wide meadow that was filled with lots of tiny butterflies the size of your little finger nail blue ones and red ones so dainty, and theses  meadows were filled with fantastic fragrances and colours.
This meadow ran along the huge stone wall then disappeared into another forest I spent the next several hours circling it before seeing the second sister.(mountain)  .Great …thunder began to boom out I laughed to myself it never rains in Oregon at this time of year !! crash it went again only louder. .mmmm I may be getting wet ,I wanted to go faster but again I was tired   it was 6 pm and I had done enough  i will walk to 6.30 I told myself then look for a flat spot unless the rain comes first
God as soon as you stop the mossies think its feeding time
I have to say they do get me down. They seem to just wear me out . But at last a flat spot and just over 29 miles..I made tea fighting with the mossies before surrendering to my tent

Day 108 a so so day

30th July
Apart from the male deer bellowing in the night I slept well but still struggled to get up as i kept snoozing my alarm
So I was on the trail by 6.45 .mmm must do better!!! lol
It was a cool morning with a light breeze just perfect as I pounded down  the   trail I hadn’t looked at the  profile so I didn’t know  if it was up down or flat…..A surprise lol I had gone about an hour when the mossies descended on me .so I stopped and sprayed myself with deet
But their are some tough buggers who don’t care ,so eventually I had yo stop again and put my bug net on ggrrrrr. off I went pounding down the trail,I haven’t seen any deer for a few days but I guess they are there  watching me. Soon it was breakfast time yummy cereal and lemon drink. While resting two hikers past me. see you up the trail they  shouted
Time to hike .I had spent most of the morning in the forest but as I dropped down their in front of me was another beautiful lake. As I needed water I detoured down a side trail to it.
Wow so beautiful I dropped my pack next minuted my clothes were in a pile and I was in the water.god it feet so good to be clean if only for a few minutes. I came ashore, then washed my clothes. As I sat drying in the sun crusher appeared. Whats it like ? he asked
Its perfect was my reply

Once my clothes we dry I headed back to the trail. The next section was through a big burn and OMG  it was hot,my watch read 95 and there was no shade. In the distance were the three sisters a large mountain range but I couldn’t really get a good photo. I was melting in the heat and  I had been in this burn for almost 3 hours so the next shade will be lunch.
While I rested in the shade crusher came past, he looked  exhausted too. ” bloody hot”  he said “I need water”. Several minutes later Timberline came through and said the exact same phrase
Soon it was time to hike but as I began to walk there was crash of thunder it rumbled .  I walked on  wondering if i was going to get wet?. It threatened all day  but at 5 pm the sky went black this is it I thought but I marched on crash went the thunder I seemed to be walking into it but I kept going, as  I wanted the miles so pushed on hoping to get to 7 pm or before the rain came . several spots of rain fell but nothing more  I then spied a few tents  by the lake that will do  I said.
One tent was Crushers and the other a section hikers  , I soon had my tent up  and  my  tea  on the  go before then it was zzzz

27 miles
Camp zzz

Day 107 shelter cove

29th July
I thought we were all leaving together at 7.30 but when I emerged from my tent at 6.30, Timberline was packed and ready to go.well its one thing that I have learnt out here and that’s not to rush so I watched him go.
I then packed up at a leisurely pace..I was ready to go at the sane time as Snakebite, we wandered off down the road together looking for the trail.
At the far end of the camp was a great shot of a mountain so I walked towards the lake to get a better view
Sleeping on the beach was Hendrick , Freedom and two other hikers I saud my good morning before re-jpoining the trail

Snakebite was cautious about which way to go , I just ploughed on .guess I must of have been right as snakebite soon came cruising past me.
I carried on at my normal pace until I came to snakebite standing in a dirt road  looking confused again. Once again  I just ploughed on and then several  minutes later he cruised past me again that made me laugh.
I was not long until i caught Snakebite again in his normal I am confused lost stance, staring at several forks
Once again i just carried on past him soon arriving at another campsite although this one is for horses. Dotted around were an assortment so amazing horse boxes ,they were like very posh motor homes .
By horse trailers were corrals for your horse, a fire ring a picnic bench and space for a few tents.a

As I walked through a lady said would you like a cinnamon roll
Why of course I would . we chatted away to her and her friends eating her cakes   and talking about horses until snake bite arrived he does make me smile   hes from. Alabama and I love his southern drawl. .I set off again as the lady had told me where the trail was. Several minutes later snakebite cruised past me yet again making me smile.
See you in shelter Cove and get me a beer
I marched on but then had to stop and coat myself in deet as the mossies were driving me nuts arrrrhhhh
Two hours later I stopped for breakfast and a sit down the sun was now out and it was warm . I guessed I was about 4 miles away from Shelter cove so there was no hurry. Time to walk. Soon I came to Diamond lakes so beautiful and unspoiled,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I paused for a few moments then walked on .the trail now began to drop and I could hear the sound of rushing water and soon I could see the Creek .I  took a few snaps although I guess I have a few hundred of rushing creeks lol.
Tap tap tap the guys from last nights camp had finally caught me up .I pulled over to let them pass as i’m never in a hurry and watched them go
Oh time for log jumping again   and a lot of crawling under, not far now I thought as several hikers passed me going south. Then I stopped to chat to two American couples. They were actually staying in shelter cove.
I crossed the railway line and i’m here whoop whoop
Now where is the shop.
As I walked up to the shop Blue sky’, Juicy and Hirobics cheered .Grams took my photo and then Juicy thrust a cold beer into my hand which I necked.
These stops are such good fun
Timberline,Freedom, Hendrick. Snakebite and 6 others where also here.
I grabbed a six pack ,signed for my resupply box  ordered a pizza  and then  went to join the guys on the deck.
To the amusement of all my hiker mates  I have brought yet another fishing pole.
There is a long story  attached to fishing poles but I will save that for later. so yes I have yet another POLE OR ROD
I then Plugged all my devices into socket to charge up,then i could relax
The first two beers slipped down so easily. I sorted through my box what a lot of stuff where’s it going to go.
Oh pizza I scoffed it and washed it down with more beer
Hirobics, Bluesky , Juicy  and Grams had been here for a while so were now getting ready to leave …
See you up the trail guys
As I sat chatting and chilling the  thunder returned bringing rain I sat it out for a while
I need to go i said putting on my packs rain coat
Okay snail lets go .I hoisted my pack onto my back OMG That is heavy.
As I marched out of the gate my old mate Foxxy appeared good to see you Foxxy.
We chatted a while then I made my way back to the trail
The rain had stopped but the thunder kept rumbling so I quickened my pace, I wasn’t going to go far maybe just five miles out and a good day tomorrow. I walked on struggling with my pack .yes its my fault I carry too much food and far too much water but that’s how I prefer it.
As I walked I came to three more amazing lakes. I felt like a dip. I felt like trying my new pole I felt like putting up my  tent and staying.
But no I needed more miles so reluctantly I walked on
I’ll walk to six I said to myself  .ping 5 pm mm an hour to go.
I strolled on  till my watch pinged 6 pm  then began to look for a camp site That will do nicely bit close too the trail. but I don’t care lol.
I put up.my tent and made tea, oh so refreshing, followed by couscous for tea with tuna, bacon bits and pumpkin seeds yummy..
I followed by a mocha then time to retreat into the tent away from the mossies

Day 106 Is that a Gun Bang

On this trail it seems must hikers do not bother with putting their rain fly onto their tents, So i found it funny  last  night  listening to them all running around  when it began to  pour with rain.
I wanted to make an early  push but was still surprised  to see that i was first away
“You off snail ” said a sleepy Juicy.
Yes mate, but your soon  catch me .
None of the gang were stirring as i marched out of camp , but I knew that they would soon catch and pass me
We chatted last night about an alternate route out of the lake, but I decided to head out the same way as i had arrived

I was making good progress , trying to guess where and when they would catch  me  up , Or maybe the shortcut was good and they were actually in front of me . Ping went my watch great time for lunch . I found a suitable spot and sat down and  had  lunch, then I decided to  make a picture of a snail

My Marker

I was rather pleased with it and had just  finished when Juicy  arrived , he  appeared on a mission  so didn’t  stop. He  was closely followed  by  Hirobics,  I  set  off with  her  but  soon began to fall behind, I was in no hurry and it was a gorgeous day.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Blue Sky and Hirobics

I eventually arrived at a road and whoop there was a large water cache here,  and  resting besides it  was Grams, Blue Sky, Timberline, Juicy  and  several other people.

One guy was waiting for his wife who was hiking a section with his daughter. Mum was disabled and wow what a feat. As we relaxed in the Shade an elderly couple walked buy with several large trout on a string.

He stopped and chatted to us then I noticed his revolver on his belt.
So I said  so  did  you  use  your  rod  or  just  shoot the fish.
Hirobics then asked if she could hold his Gun.
Of course he said taking out the bullets!
Would you like to shoot it?
Can I Hirobics Exclaimed
Several of us walked a little way off trail to watch her fire the gun.
The Man set it up for her, showed her how to aim, then stood back.
Hirobics then fired the gun.

OH-MY_GOD it was so loud ,
It was then my turn

BANG!

OMG IT IS SO LOUD!!!! my ears  were ringing for at least  10 minutes and  I could not hear  anything .

My turn to shoot
My turn to shoot

Lastly it was Grams  turn

BANG!
This was a great fun but loud.

Okay i need to get a move on i packed up and set off down the trail.
I had gone about a ¼  of a mile when a Hirobics came  running  up  to  me .. Forgotten anything snail?
No I don’t think so?
What about these! She said handing me my solar panel and phone. OMG   did  I really walk off with my most important  bit of  kit  thank  you so  much , OMG  I can’t  believe  that  I had left  them behind.

The  lake  that  most  people  were heading for  was probably  going to be  out  of  my reach  for  today, but I plodded on. It wasn’t long till Timberline caught me up, we walked together eventually coming out on to a road. There should be a campsite around here somewhere. We walked down the road until at last we came to the entrance, and followed it down into the camp. It was a fantastic setting with RVs parked all along the shore and it had a beach, a real beach.
Timberline dropped his pack ,stripped off and  was soon swimming, just as easy than a shower i guess!
I walked on through the campsite until I found an empty pitch , I had just put up my tent when Timberline joined me.
we sat  at a large  picnic  bench  and  ate  dinner , a beer would have been nice  but  we  didn’t  notice a shop so had to make do with coffee

Day 105 leaving diamond lakes

27th July
Apart from a few animals possibly a squirrel  rustling my tent I slept well and as we had planned an easy day so we weren’t getting up too early.
We both emerged from our tents around 7pm but by the time we had done bathroom chores and packed up it was almost 9am..we then decided to visit the store to grab a few things get a coffee. We walked in I grabbed two packets of cold meat a cherry pie, chips and a coffee and juicy brought similar. Juicy tried to pay but couldn’t find his debit card. .the cashier asked him his name. When juicy answered  the cashier handed him his card..juicy must of left it there yesterday so it was lucky that we called in to the store that morning.
We sat outside and drank our coffees then it was time to hit the trail if a bit later than planned.
It was about 3 miles back to the trail head.
We were about half way  when a car stopped and offered us a lift..we got in and were soon at the trail. Our driver then thrust handfuls of snickers into our hands. We thanked him then began up the trail .it was about a 4 miles climb to mount Thielson .

mount Thielson

we set off together but soon juicy was disappearing into the distance. It doesn’t help as i’m stopping to take photos and chat to  other people.
Eventually I’m at the top or rather the pct junction. Juicy is sat there chatting to father and son hikers. I join them. and as i’m taking my break Gram. Hierobics and Blue sky arrive
Then we all set off , the next destination water. As we walk we are dwarfed by mount Thielson a huge rock outcrop. We seem to circle around it.In and out of forests we walk until soon we are dropping down to a Creek. The water is ice cold and I top up m water surly it must be  lunchtime and so we drop out packs and  grab our food bags.Juicy cooks up the rest of us all have tortillas and fill them with all different things mine is cheese ham and crushed chips yummy.

While we are eating Grams and Hirobics  wash their socks .
It seems fairly busy today as several families hike by
Time to walk the final destination for today is a lake  so water maybe a swim!
I seem to be making better mileage as I was slow on the first section this morning
I pounded down the trail  it was sunny but with a nice breeze  and the miles seemed to be  falling, but to be honest I hadn’t really looked as I had just been following the crew  but from a distance. Ahead they stopped at a sign pointing out that we were st  the highest point in  Oregon and Washington. We stopped and took photos then it was time to walk. .

Signpost to add

The other guys seemed to sprint off into the distance. I wasn’t even going to try to stay with them so plodded on in my usual way ill catch up   later.
As I came over a hill the lake appeared below wow that  looks good
I began to circle down   and was soon on the shore it looked do idyllic
There were two other hikers there Lizard & xxx  plus the crew..we all set up our tents then gathered at the shore and cooked together three of us had mac cheese  , grams had couscous juicy had tortillas.
Then we all went swimming foolishly after drying off we chilled out before heading back to our tents   where we watched an amazing sunset
Oh no Deer today  sob  Night

Day 104 Crater Lake

26th July

I struggled to get up for some reason so i didn’t get on the trail till seven.
I had the rest of the climb to do before I emerged at Crater lake. ……And wow what an amazing view. .it was still early so you could not see the full colours of the water
I stood for about 10 minutes taking in the site before me. I found it just breathtaking. Beautiful, Romantic, Amazing and awesome. The mist was still rising as the sun hadn’t yet risen that high.
I had to tear my self away as I needed water. I made my way towards the store and then stood puzzled as I looked at my gps
Water was at the rim village..Further to walk then a ranger appeared Can I help sir?  Yes I need water
He pointed to the rest rooms that I had walked  by  unnoticed! !
Thank you so much. I refilled my water all 4 litres as the next was 25 miles away.
I then walked back over to the rim the colours were changing by the minute as the sun rose
I chatted to an American family who were on vacation with their children for a while before hitting the trail

The trail followed the rim for about 7 miles before rejoining the old PCT as I walked around the Rim the views Were stunning awe inspiring and so had to take many photos
The trail then began to rise towards the watch man’s tower I really don’t want to climb this i said to myself. But up and up I went
Deer phew i hadn’t seen any yesterday and was beginning to worry Lol  so I  felt more relaxed when four trotted by
Then shock !!!! Juicy made me jump by creeping up on me. OMG and other words I said
We then hiked on together. Mile after mile before it was time for a break. We stopped for breakfast with such a great backdrop   and rested.

We both agreed that our next stop should be at 2 pm .off down the trail we both marched ,Then juicy realised that he had lost a flip flop..he went back to look while I stomped off. The terrain was good and so I zoned out and the miles raced by
Ping went my watch great an hour to go.ping went my  watch Hurrah  lunch .I stopped under the shadow of a tree and chilled.
As I was making lunch  juicy appeared so  We ate lunch.together
Juicy thought it may be a good idea to go to next town for pizza and beer and I had to agree with him but for the next 5 minutes we decided against it and decided to hike on
Several hours later we arrived all hot and sweaty at the  road. We both said together that pizza and beer sound good then both laughed.
So we stuck out our thumbs

Trout Lake
Diamond Lake
Fantastic Pizza
Fantastic Pizza

After about  20 minutes we were sat in Diamond lakes  with a large pitcher of beer waiting for mega pizza. we both woofed that followed   by another pitcher of beer. Then it was Ice cream time and then we were  full
We made our way to the tent site and put up our tents and let our large tummies relax
Soon it was time got a night cap so we wandered back to the restaurant
I selected two  types of IPA Then sat outside to quaff them watching the sun set .a great end to the day

Day 103 Heading to Mazama village

25th July
I slept really well .woke st 5 am and listened to keen hikers pass my tent
There is no rush I said to myself I only have 20 miles to do
I emerged and broke camp . lucky I remembered my gloves.
Seems its colder in the mornings in Oregon, So I needed my coat too.
Off I went but hadn’t gone far when another  bear shot through the woods and went crashing though the trees .
Phew I thought, he was  fast
I set off walking I was in woods again and again  i was clambering over trees or trying to walk around them.   This forest was quite airy so the sun was at least getting through so it wasn’t long before the coat came off.. I emerged out off the forest into a large burn area. Giant needles sticking up from the ground. It went on for a while then I began to head down into a more green landscape.
I hiked on singing songs yo myself but never really knowing the words. Ping went my watch Breakfast time although there wasn’t a lot left to eat
But the break was good. I was making good time and should be at Mazama store by 2 (Crater Lake)  .I pushed on and one forest rock meadow forest they all seemed to merge but I was making good progress I z began to drop down when I was startled by several children then their dad appeared hi I called a few minutes later another too families appeared they were doing s loop..I walked on for about an hour then decided it was lunch  time and a good opportunity to use all my bits up before my resupply.
I sat munching my lunch when several more day hikers came past. Cant be far i thought to myself. And then  there was the road. I was just taking some photos when Rock steady came past .I walked after him on the road to Mazama village  .but then he vanished. he  had taken a short cut that I hadn’t seen.

As I was sorting   my gear Juicy appeared I told him about my 2 X 30 milers
Then I went and grabbed a shower and washed my clothes at the same time. They soon dry in the sun
Then I  brought some post cards another beer and packed up my gear.
Juicy had already left but I got confused and went’ the wrong way bugger bugger  finally I was back on the trail .dam I said to myself should of left earlier. I set off up the trail it wasn’t far to the Rim and water but it was almost 7.30 .bugger I am not going to try and make it tonight. The next flat spot I said to myself.

Day 102 Bear Moment and 30 miles

24th July
I slept so well enjoying a bit of a layin

and  woke feeling so pleased that I had a bit of a lay in. As i began to break camp hikers seem to be streaming past me.
i was just about to head off when i remembered that my memory card was full so it needed to change it.
I slung my pack onto my back and headed for the trail. Mm I thought its bloody cold. Yes it’s bloody cold.i know I am in the forest but its bloody cold. I need my gloves which  are at the bottom of my pack.
Note to self make sure gloves are in coat pocket
I walked on,  moaning to myself that my hands were cold and willing the suns rays to break through. .
Deer. Morning Dear I laughed to myself as she tried to hide behind a tree.
I can still see you I shouted, which stopped me thinking about my hands for a few moments .
Bear !!!!! there’s a bear  in front t of me a black bear

I cautiously looked around just in case mummy  was near, before slowly reaching for my camera. As i raised it he fled up a tree.
Brilliant for me as I could actually film him (or her) Again it is amazing how quickly these magnificent creatures can zip up a tree

A Bear

I filmed fir a few moments then let him be I was so so happy I’ve seen a few but have  never been quick enough or have frozen in panic
I felt so pleased with my self. I had to stop a little way down the path to check out the footage. Yes Omg its fantastic. Off I marched with a huge grin on my face..Further up the trail I passed two girls who were section hiking north. We said hello then I marched on. They later past me when I was taking Breakfast. At last the sun was out but I had forgotten about my cold hands after seeing the bear.
Water was my next chore. And as I got  near I could hear voices..Hi snail came a voice it was Turtle (torgue) one of the ladies who were hiking together from the Tarzan get together. Her friend sadly had to
drop out due to bad blisters. But hopes to. be back..There were two other new hikers both wearing the same trainers as me cool and also Hi-robiics was there I met her in Ashland the other day.
As I went to get water Rock steady arrived. He has  been poorly in Ashland for several days.we said our hellos then off I went
The trail seemed busy today leapfrogging other hikers  and meeting other day hikers coming the other way.

Soon it was lunch time. And I stopped to chill and eat  . Several hikers passed me  but I’d probably catch them   later
Time to walk  well walk if you can call it that. I spent the whole of the afternoon climbing over or around or crawling under trees.i would say over 50 some took some getting over ,.I know the Pct is maintained by volunteers but. Guys  its knackering. .At last the  trail headed down and I could get some speed up but every few yards there was another tree then it was climbing time I wasn’t really looking at my mileage   as the climbs were steep .but wow again some fantastic scenery as I was staring  Hi-robiics came past she was fast and was soon gone.
The terrain began to get rough similar to yesterday but no path and different rock. .This brought my pace to a halt. Typical I was tired my legs ached a  now this   I plodded on looking for a nice place to take a break. I sat in the shade ate a snack and  chilled.  My goal today was 22 miles. Yes that will do  Then Rock steady past me .see you up  the trail
I set off again I had enough water to dry camp but more would be nice
I was climbing again fantastic views but I was tired .But up I still went higher and higher across narrow paths and  higher. Down would be good I said to myself eventually I crossed over the saddle At last  yes it was down and hopefully water and camp .down the switchbacks I went but slowly as it was very loose gravel down and down spiralling down
Then through a small forest and hurrah water , I filled both bottles  and look there is a campsite. But then I thought it’s only 5 pm I can do another hour at least so off I wandered down  the trail. The sun was warm and I was feeling good  plenty of time I said to myself. I must of zoned out as I was moving and soon ping it was 6 pm. I checked my GPS OMG i ve done 26 miles.I think I can do 30 miles again so I went for it

Come on Snail trainer 2 x 30 miles in a row you can do this
I pushed on and  on  the miles were flying. I passed Rock steady  who was camped up. I   shouted at him I’m on for another 30 and zoomed by . Typical the terrain now got Shitty but I was in the zone and raced on hoping there  would be a great campsite just past my target.  Come on I said as I checked the GPS half a  mile to go then yes i’ve done it again whoop whoop whoop
Two 30 miles. In two days  I walked on a little further so pleased with myself then made camp
